I'm doing a little worldbuilding for a writing/comic project, and I find my self in need of a (relatively) simple method of generating high power electromagnetic radiation somewhere in the radio/microwave band. The idea is that one of the factions in this story would use it as a form of energy weapon against creatures that are particularly susceptible (don't ask how just yet, I'm still working on that). Do you guys have any suggestions for what methods could be used to achieve this? Ideally I'm looking for something that could be achieved without the use of silicon-based transistors, though vacuum tubes and the like are fine.
From some brief research, it looks like a backward wave oscillator is my best bet, though if you guys have better suggestions then that's obviously great. Energy requirements and efficiency are irrelevant as long as the power can be made high enough that the focused output can cook a turkey 1000 meters out.
