How did scientists realize that the atomic bomb was possible?

What was the thought process, how did we predict the amount of energy that was possible to be released?
I get the invention of gun powder and cannons. We see spark make boom, we understand that.

How did we KNOW we could get that kind of energy output from radioactivity and atomic interactions?

It came from Tenure. Tenure drove the scientists to make the theory that drove scientists to prove the theory that drove scientists to utilize the experiment for something that could make money so that they could send their kids to college so they could get tenure.

Well, first scientists realized that we can split Uranium nuclei by shooting neutrons at them. That in turn releases new free floating neutrons. With enough Uranium density (critical mass), this leads to a chain reaction of nucleus splits, each releasing some energy. Weaponizing this was probably an idea developed because WW2 was still ongoing and scientists were motivated/financed to secure victory for their nation.

Comparing masses of chemical elements shows discrepancies corresponding to this nuclear binding energy. Avogadro's number says how many nuclei there are, multiplying by the binding energy told them a kilo of uranium could release enough energy to level a city if it's converted to whatever its fission products are.
Discovery of radiation told them there was a fission mechanism, all they had to do is work out how to manipulate it.
