male pattern baldness is essentially a random side effect of hormone interaction with scalp hair follicles. There is no benefit or evolutionary purpose, but it hasn't been lost because reproduction usually occurs before the onset of balding.

It didnt play any role in evolution, since for 99,9% of human history there wasnt any selection pressure for it. However currently the rate of balding in population should reduce in couple of generations if things stay as they are (they probably wont)
