Graphene. It enables so many interesting things but only will be impactful on the world if it can be manufactured at scale. Last week it was announced that graphene could be used to convert Brownian motion into electricity. There is no need for a temperature gradient as is required by most energy capture processes. While this isn't truly free energy, for most human purposes it is.

Is this what I'm thinking it is?

If you ever played Anarchy Online you'll know it's an oldschool EverQuest or Warcraft type game set in a sci-fi universe. It didn't have "magic spells" like other fantasy games common of that time period, but they did have "Nanos" which was described as clouds of tiny nanomachines that could be programed to do literally almost anything.
