It really depends on professors, but it all depends on the situation. Getting kicked out is usually a complicated process that ultimately implies losing a good chunk of funding. It depends on the country but it usually takes a few months or the whole semester to kick you out. If not more.

Yes but you need to make up for it in other areas and basically be able to convince a PI that you're a PhD level researcher despite your poor grades. Most won't risk it unless you seem like a guaranteed successful candidate

I am in my last year of undergrad currently, so applications for PhD programs are right around the corner. However, I think I want a year off to self-study fields that I'm tangentially interested in, and to get to a healthier life balance with regards to mental health and social life. Is there any advantage to applying now and deferring a year if I get accepted, vs. possibly doing some more research on the side after I graduate and applying next year?

Another GPA question:

My GPA was around 3.0 for my first few years taking easy gen-eds and lower level major classes, then I got my shit together and started getting straight As in much more difficult classes, even adding a few minors in technical fields along the way. There is a clear line on my transcript from when I went from a B average student, getting some As and some Cs, to getting straight As, and I managed to bring my cumulative GPA up to around a 3.4. Considering that my GPA in the recent years was about 3.9 with a remarkably more difficult workload, do you think this is good enough to be competitive for top research universities in my field? Or will I get filtered out because of the cumulative 3.4 GPA? I also have some research experience and have made connections with professors, so I think I'll have some very strong letters, but I don't want to get my hopes up for a top 15 university if my lackluster overall GPA will keep me out.

The question is a bit technical for me as i didnt specialize in optics, but i would say that philosophically, metamaterials are basically any stuff that you arrange periodically that, if seen at a large enough wavelength, seem to be basically a homogeneous thing. In that way, many things that are a pile of stuff can be considered as metamaterials.

Nobody just uses the term metamaterial without any adjectives anymore anyway as the term is incredibly vague.

R&d is by definition always on the chopping block no matter the field, let alone yours. Funding will obviously be fucked but it shouldnt be an issue you should worry about as it is the professors who are on the lookout for funding. You could also apply for scholarships that do not mind the field you're interested in.

I know that I want to do a PhD and that I have the motivation to stick to it. But I don't know how to gauge whether my credentials are good enough to get into one.

How do I decide whether to apply for masters programs or to be more ambitious and go for the PhD ? I do have some research/publications on my CV (although the publications have been with the editor for months so they are technically just preprints)

I heard that if you get rejected from a PhD, you can ask to be considered for a masters. Is that true?

I have great GPA from undergrad/masters, and did a semi-legit research project with two professors, which resulted in a publication. I've gotten along with those two really well and I'm sure they will write me a great letter. I keep seeing people say they have a 4.0 GPA. What does that mean? How can you have a perfect GPA? Does that mean you NEVER got a single question wrong on an exam during four years of university?
In my country GPA is calculated by averaging all your grades. Your grades consist of your scores (percentage) on exams + homework + any other criteria the professor sets. Some professors grade on a curve. The average GPA (out of 4) in my department was around 3.1.
I've heard things about how in western universities if you get like 85-100% in a class then you get full marks for that class. Is this true?

So in the US there's a letter to GPA scale, like

A -> 4.0
A- -> 3.7
B+ -> 3.4
etc

You get grades in each class, which is average of homework, tests, quizzes, project, or whatever else in the class. That gets converted to a letter. Then all your letter grades are converted to GPA and then averaged. So 4.0 GPA average just means you got an A in each class, which is usually like 93% or above.

At a typical US university, a 4.0 GPA is perfect, meaning you got high A's in every class. Your GPA is calculated by weighting the number of credits with the grade earned. At my university, we have
A = 4.0
A- = 3.67
B+ = 3.33
B = 3.0
B- = 2.67, etc.

I think some universities opt to not have different weights depending on if you get a high or low letter grade.

Of course. Actually, academic careers rarely depend on the university you are from and actually depends more on your academic contributions and your professor's reputation. There's a black dude at UCLA that came from a noname university in France that got a tenure position after getting tenured in france (which is still hard but comparatively easier). But since the dude was literal god when it came to publishing and so was his advisor, he got a postdoc at Berkeley and he's now tenured there. Berkeley may not be Ivy but it's definitely up there.

Shortly put, publish, be active, do extensive research on who is your professor. Trust me, he more than you will be a major factor on how many publications you'll do during your PhD. My co-advisor did a Nature, and 6 articles in good journals + a dozen conference papers in the span of 3 years of PhD, I shit you not. His advisor ? The same guy as UC Berkely dude's advisor. And if said advisor wasn't retired i would have loved to have him on board.

The top students in french universities usually get a grade of 14/20 to 16/20, which translates to a 3.0, i.e a B, when these guys are actually A to A+ by french standards. French professors are such cunts that they will actually not give you a perfect mark even if you did everything perfect.

This isn't fully true.
While your work is what matters most, you're going to have a much harder time going from a PhD at East Amazon University to a postdoc at Caltech. There's still a good amount of prestige-fagging in academia, with some fields having much more than others.

General question for you guys: why do you want to do a PhD?

I wasn’t interested in doing research until I started my master thesis on deep reinforcement learning. Now I just do independent research, with no professor telling me what to do, no teaching duties, no publishing rat race, no begging for grants, and I can finance it with a regular job which allows me plenty of free time.

The current academic environment seems so toxic to thinking deeply and carefully about things. Plenty of major contributions in the past were made by people who published only a few papers in their entire career. That’s impossible nowadays.

The research and work I'm interested can only really be done at well-funded institutions, as the equipment can cost into the millions.
And if I decide I hate it, the skills are directly transferable to R&D at certain companies. So it's a win-win for me. The only downside is I'm stuck working for minimum wage for 7 years.

I've copied my summary that I wrote for myself when I wrote my statement:
Explain why they will not regret accepting you. Show them what you're good at and why you will be a good fit for their department. Describe your plans and ambitions for after you've graduated. Overall keep it short but well-written. Don't waste their time with long formal introductions and greetings. Don't be repetitive.

On top of this, you absolutely need a paragraph where you talk about groups at the specific school you're applying to. That means you have to personalize the statement of purpose for each app, but it's worth it. It shows the schools that you've done the research, and you're not just applying for the sake of it. Something as small as "I am incredibly interested in the work of Prof. X, especially their research into Y," and maybe a sentence about why you think that you're a good fit.

Unless you're applying for theory work, GPA is one of the less-important areas of the application for top universities. In order, the most important parts of the application are:
Research
Recommendation letters
GPA/Awards/Academic success
Test scores

Don't worry about your GPA. You can always throw in one line into your essay explaining how you "needed a year to get the hang of college and then you got it completely figured out" or something.
What really matters for these top schools is your research experience. Think about it this way: they're admitting you to do research, they're not admitting you to do well in classes.

I can almost guarantee that the best school for what you specifically would want to do is not MIT. If it's the name you're after, then you're going to be rejected just on the basis that their admissions department can tell you're only applying because they're ranked highly overall.

In my defense, he couldn't solve those problems either, so I have no idea what he expected me to do. But still, I worry that if he does write a letter, it would be a negative one. Am I overthinking this?

Besides him there is basically no one else that comes to mind.

Not OP, but I think you should definitely still ask him, since it sounds like you don't have anyone else. You put yourself in a tough position by citing a lack of knowledge and uncomfortability with slow progress as the reason for not doing research, since those are things you can expect to be dealing with to some extent in grad school. I think its usually better to be honest and straightforward with professors if there's something going on in your personal life. I definitely don't think he would write a negative letter, but it might be good to retroactively explain that you were dealing with a lot at home that made you drop the research.

PhDs are a CERTIFICATION. You're not working for free. You're getting a diploma out of it. That's why people call that a "stipend". It's supposed to offset living expenses the same way a scholarship does (stipends can also be funded through scholarships). You're not supposed to be saving fucking money during a PhD, even though some circumstances may allow for higher monthly pays (industrial phds for example).

If you're doing a PhD for the money, let me be clear about this : you're not getting more money from a PhD alone. It's a specialization in R&D fields.

As a rule, you should have at least 3 to 2 journal articles to have a "decent" PhD. But again, it depends on the field. Some hardly publish. Some are popping publications like hot cakes. You want answers for shit, but you don't even give any precision about all this.

Now, it's also a way to boost your ass up should you do a masters in a shitty uni, but have great grades, and therefore apply to outstanding phd programs. These are qualities that are not required for classic industry work, and they're actually not welcome. Upper management does not want innovative engineers that can shine and take their place. A PhD has been specifically taught not to do that, but to become an expert in a certain field to the extent that even the professor should be less knowledgeable in that particular field.

PhD's are for R&D, at least when they start.

Even in STEM fields, how the fuck can a EE dude tell you if a PhD in fluid mechanics yield more papers than a PhD in applied math for mechanical engineering ?

People need to be specific. What if i told you the most useful fields were electrical engineering and machine learning but you weren't interested in either of them ? The answer would be irrelevant then.

If you're beating a dead horse because a former PhD laid the ground work on what you're currently working on, if your field is a field where publications are easier to make, you can easily make two to three journal articles the first year.

If you're pioneering an entirely new field you may not even publish the second and first year, but have a shit ton of articles going on your third year.

publications "per year" are not relevant. What is relevant is the total number of publications, or at the very least, the number of publication per year in your field in average.

GPA is kinda shitty (around 3.3) but atleast the classes I got a bad grade in were lower-level. Upper level math courses were mostly As.
Did something that resulted in "giving a talk" ("Giving talks" is considered CV worthy in math academia)
GRE was decent (fuck the GRE)
Went to two math related workshops last summer
Have two unpublished preprints (it takes many months to publish something...)
Graduating one year early (i.e., 3 years for a 4 year degree)

Not French, but similar grading policy in eastern europe. 95%+ is A, no curve. It's supposed to have a bell curve around C average, but that's a hit and miss. Having B average is considered pretty good. A average is maybe one person in the whole generation.

Again, not French, but depends. If they have heard of your uni, they know how to interpret it. If not, you're fucked.
It's an endless student rant about how rating inflation fucks us over due to different standards. I probably have the third highest grade average in my generation, yet I have a B- average.
