CS a proper subset of maths? Ridiculous, sharing a course with them (Quantum Information & Computation, from physics myself) and they always keep complaining about the math being too hard in the homework. Surely respectable Math majors wouldn't struggle with that?

I don't know many who say this, mainly since the people who I work with, while largely having been CS/math double majors in undergrad and now work in theoretical CS and math, don't need to constantly justify that we go between the role of scientist and mathematician often. The ones who say muh proper subset are bad undergrads who don't know anything

It's also worth saying that I don't know if TCS is purely math, or the other way around. What I do know is that I, and many other CS researchers, end up writing more papers that land in math journals than you would think.

Learning how to approximate without breaking anything is one of the most interesting things in mathematics. Engineers are brainlets though.

Programming itself is just using an existing language to issue and record instructions that some high level framework will execute, it is literal excel spreadsheet tier work.
There are exceptions of course, people who come with new algorithms (normally they are mathematicians or people with background in math or STEM), and older programming that used low level languages. But most what exists today in mainstream is just garbage indian level work.

No, this is software engineering. I've never seen anybody discriminate against CS PhDs or scoff at a paper from STOC of FOCS.

The majority of CS, not codemonkeying, out in the field comes from research labs from microsoft, nvidia, academia, etc.. and have many hired CS PhDs. BSc holders in CS doing codemonkey work are not computer scientists.
