Why is Tyson afraid of debating Eric Dubay? Is his Phd in telescope viewing not enough to defend the idea that the earth is somehow round?

I once saw one of his interviews and he said that debates aren't the right thing to do when discussing scientific theories, because the man with the biggest confidence and charisma and the wrong ideas can win a debate over someone less convincing but with the right ideas

Btw i hate NdGT but he's got something similar to a point there

ALL extemporaneous debates suck, on JRE, on CNN, at some professional looking university set-up, anywhere. It is a BAD IDEA to agree to them. Even in flat earth debates, Tyson could prep all he wants (explaining light diffraction, why the disc model can't yield the phenomena we see, etc.) and Eric could just plan to say something about the topic that Tyson never heard before. On JRE it might be able to be looked up on the spot, but you're relying on Joe Rogan to be able to look up the relevant information.
Might as well just have a fucking text debate, but it's on flat earth, so that's a fucking waste of time too.

No they dont. Debates in university settings are pretty good at showing in a short amount of time who has the better arguments for their side. If you think that they all suck, I doubt so many professors who are experts in their fields would continue to participate in them and that universities would continue to hold them
