the main reason 4chan is successful is that threads are bumped based on reply count and discussion which encourages argument and discussion which leads to people learning to think critically which leads to a wiser userbase. This is why 4chan boards tend to be more clued up and savvy than their reddit counterparts as reddit focuses on whats popular and groupthink which leads to stagnation as ideas aren't challenged and given a chance to evolve.
