>>12201563everything is a coping mechanism, anon. be it religion, science, philosophy, sports, games, arts -- it is all a temporary escape from the cold dead material universe we are a tiny part of, suffering under the pain of a perceived "consciousness" which inevitably will end. even breathing and eating are simply a mechanism to cope with the body steadily suffocating and withering, which is inevitable too. procreation is the inter-generational coping mechanism against death, but in the long run our species will be superceded and ultimately the sun will burn out and the universe will have a cold heat death, so we're just coping with the inevitable in everything. making the best of it for the time being
don't want to be depressing to anybody -- you could look at this situation in a positive way if you like, that our coping mechanisms are the source of happiness and that's good. but ultimately most of what all living things do is driven by biological imperatives like surviving. which is just a temporary cope really. the rest of what living things do are basically random; when you are bored and pick up a book at random that is basically just the programming that evolution has given you to try novel survival techniques when your other needs are satisfied, and it is just another manifestation of living creatures' coping mechanisms in the interlude that exists before all life, and all of time and space, ultimately ends
