because of 1) the obviously great work he did on GR, from Penrose diagrams up to the singularity theorems and a bunch more, 2) twistor theory, he was a lone wolf pushing it for years as a quantum gravity approach, 3) The Road To Reality is like the physics bible, 4) he has some really good criticisms of string theory, not popsci tier trash like sabine, and his book Fashion Faith and Fantasy is really an important outside perspective, and 5) he has interesting thoughts on interpretations of quantum mechanics and has proposed some interesting new interpretations, when most of the physicists out there act like it is not even worth talking about; he is one of the main people who revived the whole discussion

it’s not fun to read at all, it’s more of a physics encyclopedia. and not even very useful. but taken as a whole if you can understand the topics (which get really advanced like twistor theory) then it sort of has an overall lesson about his approach to physics (which is very unique, since he’s a relativist and an algebraic geometrist, it’s a very geometric style and an almost “classical” type view as opposed to the quantum field theoretic view you mostly see from high caliber physicists)

if you want something that is more of a readable book that presents the penrose philosophy less abstractly then i recommend Fashion Faith and Fantasy, which is a lot newer and more up to date too

I have tried reading Road to Reality, but it is a big effort to read this thing back to back. There is too much information, and things are not necessarily related to one another. As anon said it, it is kind like an encyclopedia. With that said, you can consult particular subjects that you are interested in there

Penrose is a genius but I think his thoughts on consciousness are pretty silly. He'll be proven wrong long past his lifetime once we have sentient AI. He's too unimaginative in his idea of what computing is capable of.

I have experience with parallel computing, numerical simulations and development of machine learning algorithms and I fully agree with him. There is a qualitative difference between what humans do and what machines do. There will never be AI and we unironically have souls of some kind.
