Aside from that, staying at home when we're not in a pandemic means you miss out on networking with other researchers, talking to your PI, seminars, conferences, publisher deals, cross collaboration with other fields, etc..
I never understand this notion that math was any different than other stem fields just because you're doing theory. You still need some experimental resources and access to computers. The most important part of your thesis starts with paper reviews and organization. Suggesting otherwise feels weird, especially when i can pick up theoretical physics textbooks and possibly ''''get results'''' while siting at home.
