NPs are good at doing grunt work under the supervision of a physician, provided they didn't go to a diploma mill.

If they did go to a diploma mill, then they're almost guaranteed to be garbage, and there are no unifying standards of quality as in medicine to guarantee they did not.

Independent practice for NPs is nonsense though. I think a physician should sign every order made by one.

Oh, and I forgot to add, the AANP is a lobby and will advocate for anything that helps its members professionally (kinda like the AMA) - so don't take its word on terribly done research by NPs for NP lobbying.

Agree mostly but I am in favour of independent practice for nurse practitioners in very remote communities. These places often do not attract physicians or have major shortages. An NP can at least provide some level of decent basic medical care.

I think we'd do better allowing foreigners from countries with competent medical education programs to go to those places. We already require it as part of the J1 visa for foreigners who do their residency in the US, but that's obviously limited by how many residencies we have here. I'm sure doctors from most of Western Europe with a residency education abroad (which the VA and only the VA will hire!) are more competent than an NP and if my rural relatives required care I'd much rather not entrust it to a nurse with a graduate degree

I think they can go fuck themselves. This is the result of insurance companies completely fucking over the whole medical guild. Every NP working out there is one less job for med graduates and another excuse for insurance companies and their lobbysts to inflate healthcare costs and bottleneck medical training.

We already do this in Canada, a lot of IMG's sign ROS (return of service) agreements. I would like to see them increase the number but I don't think it's realistic for that to happen anytime soon.
