The best example, math is totally useless as such. But it develop tools applied in every scientific field.
There is however good scientific methodology and bad scientific methodology.
Soft science (such as sociology) are often plague with poor scientific methodology. In fact, this field should require the best "scientist" to produce good results.
(you don't really need to understand the scientific methodology and questioning to do math for example).
But that is an interesting question
