Yeah, but I think for the most part people conflate humility with being assholes. If you tell a nice person to be humble, that means you want them to drown with you, but telling an asshole to be humble is more like telling them to atop being a dick because the world doesn't run on geniuses.

Ugly people have to be more competent to overcome the bias against them.

At a given level of achievement, the ugly person is probably more skilled or cunning.

You could make the same argument for attractive people. Attractive people get viewed as less competent so at higher levels they have to be competent and cunning as well.

The idea is that competent people tend to be average in looks, and when someone more competent comes in that is on either side of the spectrum, they will be hated, either because they're ugly and "unpleasant to work with" or because they're attractive and "full of themselves".

The only thing that attractive people have is that they probably get let off the hook by other attractive people, whereas ugly people tend to not be so kind to other ugly people

Most people are not especially smart. Most people are not especially attractive. The odds of someone being both smart and attractive are naturally significantly lower than those of someone being just one or the other. That's where the stereotypes come from.
