Women were there as trophies to be claimed by successful men.
Men had to be successful at production, trade, and/or warfare.
All of these domains are competitive and exert a selective pressure for intelligence/strategy on men.
By selecting for success, women's selection (or their father's) was biased towards intelligence.
Men did not impose a similar selection criteria on women and instead chose for looks.
Why didn't evolution give the benefits of both criteria to both genders?
If some traits that make one proficient in one of the domains leaves them deficient in the other domain, then you would expect those traits to be sex-specific.
