Why couldn't subtract a large number from a smaller number, so we made up a number

We couldn't find the root of two, so we made up a number.

We couldn't find the root of minus one, so we made up a number.

We can't divide by zero but we haven't made up any number. Why is that?

I almost continued this larp but got sad. Thank god I'm a math professor, I teach my precalculus students that anyone who thinks zero or irrational number dont exist is in need of serious mental health counselling.

There's some algebra called a wheel I think and it's some structure where division by zero is defined, but I don't know if there are any real uses for it in other area's of math or anything.

Because any such number has strange properties which don't fit into the many nice properties of R.
People use things like the extended reals (infinity and -infinity), the one-point compactification of the reals (just one infinity attached to both ends, RP^1, the circle), or the extended complex plane (one infinity attached to all directions in the complex numbers, the Riemann sphere, CP^1, just a sphere)
But all of these lose some nice properties of the reals/complex numbers when you look at how infinity acts.
The best one is probably the Riemann sphere, complex functions extend really nicely to infinity including things like 1/z extending to z=0.

because were certain there isn't one. Even if you had infinite 0s, you wouldn't get x in x/0. There is no algebraic quantity that this can equal, so you say undefined.
