i will be beginning my studies at the FAU (maths BSc) in less than a month and i was wondering whether there are any alumni or krautanons browsing the board right now who are in the know about this uni's math department and what it's like. from what i understand the uni has relatively high standing among German universities, although not specifically in the mathematical area, where Bonn is a leader
anything you guys would like to share?

Funnily enough Im currently studying my MSc. in Mechatronics there but this semester im starting a BSc in math at TU Dresden

why not FAU itself? is TUD superior in some way or was the decision of a personal variety?
what can you tell me about the uni itself, are you satisfied with your studies there? do you know any maths majors? what do they say?

I liked the uni I guess. I could go into more detail for my major but that would not really be interesting.
Math in germany is standardised so there wont be a big difference between unis
The only math major I knew seemed pretty happy, but I did not talk much to him. Actually he went and got a physics MSc before starting his PHD so he must have been happy with the uni.

how does one get such gibs, was it a grant you got through competition or some kind of social subsidy?

damn, that's low, i'm used to the exorbitant Munich-area prices. on the subject of rent, how bad is the housing situation in the Erlangen-Nuernberg area? i was actually just starting to look for lodging there, any tips you might have (or something more solid, like actual vacancies you know of)?

so how come you want to study maths having done mechatronics, tell me a bit about that

Just standard Bafög. Your parents need to earn below a certain level for you to get it.

housing is ok there. I paid around 420 warm for a tiny appartment but it can be pretty hard to find something. Sadly I dont have any specific vacancies. As a tip you can look for housing in nuremberg. There should be more there and going by S-Bahn to erlangen doesnt take long

I went into control theory which is pretty math heavy and I kind of just got more and more into it. Did some math books on proofs and set theory and then decided that I really liked it and wanted to do more

sorry to hassle you, but got any links? my father is the only one who works here and he earns about 5k brutto and i have a vague suspicion i might qualify

i was told that and to look in the Fuerth area especially, will do. i took a look at the SW dorm prices there and it's around 300-something, would you recommend these?

If you can get in sure. I personally couldnt but I didnt live too far away and only selected single appartments as options. Might be too late for this semester though.
