I thought of a way to convert heat to mechanical energy, possibly with 100% efficiency. Here it is.
Heat up a block of metal, then it expands. You can use it to do work directly, like pushing a gear. Then you cool the block of metal, and it contracts, and you use it to do work, like pulling a gear. You just need a long piece of metal. Would this work?
