The coronavirus ideological pivot - Why?

No.12179248 ViewReplyOriginalReport
January/February
>Coronavirus is only a topic of conversation for fringe far-right crazies and conspiracy kooks
>Alex Jones-tier nutjobs proclaiming this "scary new china flu" is going to unironically wipe out humanity
>People sharing videos of people "dropping dead in the streets in china" or being "welded into their homes"
>/pol/ is absolutely fucking freaking out and saying "this is it. this is the big one. total societal collapse."
>Leftists and centrists just pretending it doesn't exist, or saying that even talking about coronavirus is somehow racist against Chinese people

March
>Suddenly everyone starts flipping their god damn shit over the span of a week
>Doomsday panicking that was previously only prevalent on /pol/ and conspiracy circles suddenly crosses over into the mainstream
>Normalfags on Twitter proclaiming "THIS IS IT, WE'RE ALL GONNA FUCKING DIE"
>Everything shuts down
>Mainstream media which previously denied coronavirus now pretends it will cause everything from heart damage to brain damage to infertility - views that were previously only espoused among wacko conspiracy theorists
>The fringe right-wing and /pol/ slowly shifts in turn, going from being happeningfags who believe corona will cause societal collapse, to saying "its literally just a flu"

Can anyone please explain to me how the fuck this all happened, because it was so fast I feel like I've got whiplash. Why did the ideological boundaries and arguments regarding coronavirus literally do a 180 in March?
