Light is a wave, or behaves like one sometimes. Unlike other waves that we know, e.g. sound, it doesn't really have a medium in which it travels, right? It's amplitude isn't pointed into a specific direction. But when we do the double slit experiment, it behaves like the amplitude was perpendicular to the slits.
