"Why?" you ask. Simple : you'll cut off more than half of your reasoning time with calculations if you already memorized all notable operations of the base 10 system to your heart, and when I mean by your heart I actually mean instant memorization, not "taking 1.5 seconds to remember the operation" memorization, because even the slightest of memory recovery delays will stack up and wear down your mental stamina and demotivate you to keep going as well as occupy your mind with trivial reckoning when you should be keeping your attention on the logic behind the problems you'll be facing.
I personally did it like this : I kept rewriting the specific table I wanted to memorize at the same time I repeated it on my head and if I ever had the slightest hesitation when trying to remember a result I would go back to the beginning until it was knee jerk reaction. I did it until I learned all tables.
