Why wouldn't machines reach a state of intelligence that is superhuman? In fact, they already have. No human can perform mathematic calculations as fast as a super computer. Nor can they beat a computer in chess, or go. Or, for that matter, in StarCraft 2.
These are all very narrow tasks, but what happened when an AI can do hundreds of such tasks at the same speed? Thousands? Millions? What happens when we make an AI with general intelligence, and it's a million times faster than the smartest human?
And if you don't think humans would cede social power to an AI, I've got bad news for you. We already have. Many banks have investment portfolios that are largely or wholly managed by AI software. What happens when the software gets so good at predicting the stock market, we can't fathom what it's doing? Are we really going to just ignore it; the goose that lays the golden egg? No, no, humans will ceded more and more social power to AI as it becomes financially sensible to do so.
