If an academic called australopithecus, habilis or erectus races he would soon be an ex-academic. The fiction they must maintain is that all the pre-human species are extinct and everyone alive today is "homo sapiens." Never mind that an australopithecus might well be able to interbreed with a living hominid if the former were still around.
