understanding is the key to learning, and it cames with imagination and simulation. If you hoard info for a test you can remember, but if you understand why this happen or how x came to be y, the process, then you will not need to memorize that much.
The problem usually is that if you go too deep on a subject it probably will have other factors or areas of study and you have to get on there too to catch every subtle detail.
In example, if you know how to fix a motorbike, but you want to change a part and make it from scrap, you need to know about physics, mechanics, volumes, aerodynamics... maybe only the basic to do that part, but you have to understand them at least.
