Depends on the field you want to enter? Theoretical physics, free you can do it in your mind or a couple grand for a computer if you want to do simulations. Biochem, six to seven figures.
Then again I've seen good published papers on experimental physics form Cuba using sand and ants. The limintg factor is actually your creativity and intelligence.

I was thinking about setting up a basic EEG lab for neuro and adjacent research so it would be harder to get creative (albeit not impossible but I'm not sure what the legal requirements would be in those cases)
