If you mean economic relations between space colonies it all comes down on how much economic interchange happens amongn those countries. If there is almost none (shipping goods maybe too expensive) there will be no need for that. Maybe you can still have a digital market (sw, movies etc) but it could be not enough.
In the past communist countries didn't even need a convertible currency as there was little interchange with the west.
And yes even if their market was heavily state controlled they all had an internal currency.
