I am a space captain or admiral and we are losing a war with the aliens because when we first made contact with them our society was to eager to be "tolerant", "progressive", "accepting" and "diverse" so we accepted too many alien immigrants. Then they had the opportunity to plan a take over with assistance from within. They slowly get to hold key positions in society and politics and manage to prepare the ground. They destroy and disarm a lot of weapons right before their main forces invade. After being startled and losing many battles it gets to the point where the only way to win is to never let them in in the first place. There is an experimental time traveling device which can only transport a little mass at enormous energy costs. High command decides to send someone back to an appropriate time to change the flow of history and since I am the most decorated officer in the fleet they choose me. When I step in the machine I either go back too far and have encounters with neatherdals or I wake up in the present and have to spend several moments trying to make sure I am not a time traveler with a mission to change history.
