The real challenges are convincing the entrenched scientific priesthood to allow new ideas, and admit where their models are incomplete, and also the math that goes along with such a union gets complicated very fast.
Finding humans that can understand a rich enough symbolic map is more difficult than unifying the 2 fields, and as soon as you get enough mathematicians who can manipulate symbols to a higher degree, the 2 fields will unify then and there; At least into a working model.
