I'm reading pic chapter by chapter and I just started. I'm on chapter 2.2 where they talk about the properties of set theoretical operations and I'm already board and frustrated. I think it's because I'm reading this book in the wrong order and I've been in courses where professors do lessons out of chapter order.
Why don't they put the fundamental chapters first then the supplementals after?

Jean Gallier's Springer book (Discrete Mathematics) and Knuth's Concrete Math's first chapters are both way better treatments of discrete mathematics as a primer. Ideally you should do van Lint and Diestel/Bollobas for combinatorics and graph theory respectively to get into more discrete mathematics, but the former two books are very good for teaching you how discrete mathematics as a culture and set of topics integrates to the rest of mathematics as well.

The best thing you can get from discrete math books is their laser focus on solving hard problems with simple tools implementing big brain ideas rather than building theory around the problem until definitions and lemmas solve it for you. Focus on problems - you will have time to build theory past the basics as you do other things from mathematics.

Not OP, but pedagogy is important if you want to develop foundational ideas and connect them to the rest of math. You should aim to keep general audiences of students engaged, to connect the problems naturally to methods used in the text (I love Rudin but it really fails on this front), and to present the material in a way in which every lesson fits together like a story describing the state of what we understand, what we have some insight into, and what we have no way to tackle.

Committing to reading a textbook front to back usually doesn't end well. If a part is confusing you, don't feel guilty skipping it, you can always go back later anyways. If there are later parts in the book that you want to get to, just jump to them and try them. If there really is some prerequisite issue that comes up, use the index to find where it's covered earlier in the textbook, or just look it up on Wikipedia. This nonlinear style can make studying more natural and less boring.
