Most PI are autistic degenerate, my take on PhD is ' You've done you BSC and MSc, it's only more step to get the "final diploma".

the problem is the nature of my work is very research focused and getting positions in industry isn't that abundant. Research was something that satisfied my ambitious desires in life and now the only alternative I see is working in some ambitious company. Even then it's hard to get into said companies with just my MS.

I realize, but yes this being an engineering department is an important detail. As far as I know, engineering professors end up being more anal retentive about their their students than other stem subjects, which has little to do with an difficulty or prestige lmao.

Yeah this lab is pretty hardcore, the guy is a known hardass and pumps out papers like mad. He's super young and ambitious and doesnt really have time for bullshit. I fucking killed myself doing research under him and it just turned out I wasn't good enough.

Some people aren't fit for academia, it is an oversaturated field so now only the very smart ones can prosper in it, so maybe the professor is right. It sounds like he is at least trying to get the kind of people he thinks will prosper in academia into the field, instead of some professors who will just let more PhDs run to their own dead end in academia. You can keep pursuing academia if you want since his words aren't final, but you need to think over this carefully, do you really really want to be a scientist?

I fantasise just barging my way into his office when he is between classes, I can just imagine his resting smug face, expecting yet another one of his underling students have come to lick his shoes morphing into a confused look as I pull out a Baseball bat and lurch towards him, I will feel pleasure watching the confusion on his face turn into fear and shock as the bat wails down from above my head hitting and fracturing his skull, he will just slump down onto the desk at that point knocked out, but I'll just become utterly savage and just strike his head several times in a few seconds and listen to the satisfying crunch of steel meeting his weak pathetic skull, when my initial blood lust washes over me I will drop the bat and collapse onto his couch where I will rest for a few min before getting up and eating his lunch.

Trust me, the guys who shit out papers like crazy are almost always going to drag you down into irrelevance in the long run. Publishing large volumes of shit works to boost your career in the short term, but in the long term, you only realise the holes you've shot in your feet far, far too late.
Avoiding these people is a good thing. You might realise this later on. You want high quality and moderate quantity, and almost nobody ever achieves high quality and high volume. Especially not in maths.
