That ignores the fact that the point of intersection with the sphere will vary depending on the distance, as shown in this glorious MS Paint graphic.

I'm looking for the complete answer but don't know where to look for it.
Did a few Google searches but the few results I found seem to ignore that effect. And I suppose it's not mentioned in general introductory books to astronomy/calculus/geometry.

In astronomy, where I think this would be used most, it really isn't going to matter because the distances are so huge.

Using basic trigonometry. Diameter is D, L is the lenght from you to the surface of the sphere, assuiming is far from you:
$D= \frac{2L\tan\left( \frac{\theta}{2}\right)}{1-\tan\left( \frac{\theta}{2}\right)}$
