It's identity politics.
Everyone (except some white men) is trying to belong to some special group, and everything that sets them apart, even if it's harmful to their quality of life, must be preserved and promoted.

I imagine it is some sort of reaction to modern globalized society. People feel lost, humiliated and unrooted, and they try to build up some kind of solid platform to stand upon. I'm not sure why they can't have a common one though.

The vast majority of young deaf people have a cochlear implant these days. Many of them learn sign language anyway and are involved with Deaf culture. Cochlear implants are not a magic cure. Using them is like using those fake shin + feet things amputee runners use. Some people do really well with them, some people don't. They're not comfortable and they are tiring to use.

Most Deaf people these days are very much in the "use hearing technology AND use sign language" camp

No idea what they'll do when a genuine cure appears

The difference is that even reasonable minorities who realized it was a meme still usually go along with it since they are encouraged and pressured to do so. So only a few exceptions really reject it. Only white men are discouraged from asserting their identity, so only they escape it in large numbers.

Yes, you're right. There will probably always be a core group that are pretty comfortable with how they live without much desire to get hearing tech, et cetera. If you stay in the "bubble" you barely have to deal with spoken English very often at all

Deaf people wanting to stop other deaf people from getting CIs were mostly a strong reaction to CI technology in the 1990's and early 2000's.

Every militant "strong-Deaf" I know these days is not really against CI anymore. They're just against not teaching deaf kids sign language and are OK with both.
