taking Probability Theory course and we review the following problem in class:
>Ten percent of the engines manufactured on an assembly line are defective. If engines are randomly selected one at a time and tested, given that the first two engines tested were defective, what is the probability that at least two more engines must be tested before the first nondefective is found.
The way I solved the problem: Since events are independent, it does not matter how many defective engines were found, what we're really asking for is the probability that 1 nondefective engine is found after two or more engine tests. Or for being geometric with
Since
So the answer is just 0.1
The way my professor solved the problem: Proceeds to write the entire conditional bayesian statement, and ends up getting the wrong answer. Then does a hand wavy reply when told the correct answer.
I asked via email if my solution is sufficient for the Exam if such a problem were to come up. Professor replies with basically a no.
Fuck state colleges. Seriously.
>inb4 Your professor is trying to teach you the correct formuli for future courses on Machine Learning, god anon you're so stubborn!
No. Fuck anyone who says this. This is just efficient problem solving skills, God help if you can actually think instead of blindly regurgitate some shit.
