It's not about being a slacker, it's about having a life. everyone uses their phone or computer sometimes. I've met wetland scientists and they're all outgoing normies. I don't know what it is about wetlands, but all the ones I've met seemed pretty happy with their careers despite the lower pay on average. but all STEM people use social media like the rest of us. Maybe not in the way you're thinking; they won't go to facebook or reddit to "discuss" science shit, they just look at memes and cat pictures cause they're too tired to bring their jobs home. Even in computer science, actual online discussion these days is almost completely dominated by undergrads and non-scientists
