Engineers sometime apply the results of science, but their methods are entirely different. Scientists ask and answer questions, engineers just tell other people to build things.

I don't think that distinction is so clear and cut. Sometimes engineers do science and scientists do engineering. Lots of engineers have made contributions to science and many scientists have made contributions to engineering. A lot of engineers are doing research which firmly fits into the science category. A lot in materials research.

mech and civ eng are two very related disciplines. On the sci guide just combine some geoscience books with mechanical books but take out the dynamics and machine parts of the mech section.

Seems like the lowest average pay among the disciplines but allows you to live anywhere, every city hires civils and the construction industry is everywhere. Probably higher pay if you get into project management or mining maybe. I'm in my third year and happy with my choice although I'm starting to find other disciplines more interesting. I think academia in civil would be quite dull but the work opportunities are good.

Trusses are easy, but Von-Mieses stuff and the Moment of inertia stuff was pretty damn hard to understand since it's so threoretical. But don't get me wrong, it gave me an asswhooping that I was later glad for.
