Halo cars like the Roadster 2.0 are money-sucking wastes of resources and it's abundantly clear right now that Tesla is focusing on Model 3 QC issues and getting Model Y production up to speed.

Stuff like $200,000 roadsters that they'll sell 5000 of if they're lucky and self-driving software upgrades that will probably get immediately banned by half of the states are distractions from those other issues that are far more pressing for Tesla's bottom line.

We probably also won't see the cybertruck until 2023-2024 for the same reason.

What you're forgetting is that roadster (and other high end cars) serve as R/D for the rest of the line up. Sure, most people aren't gonna buy one, but the tech from the roadster will carry down to the other cheaper models. Most companies do that.

While that may be true for internal combustion engine-powered supercars where technologies like dual overhead cams, 4 and 5-valve cylinder heads, turbochargers, and piston geometries that can rev above 7000RPM all appeared in supercars decades before they did in your average Chevy or Honda, it's the exact opposite for electric cars, and it's actually far, far easier and less technologically intensive to build a 1000hp electric car that sells for $200k than it is to build a 100hp electric car that sells for $20k.

It's much harder to build a cheap electric motor of average power or a lightweight battery setup than it is to build an expensive one that's far more powerful.
The Tesla Roadster 2.0 is just rearranged Model 3 cells powering a more powerful electric motor. That's much, much simpler relative to the Model 3 than a Ferrari is relative to a Fiat.

I'd also bet that the marketing research for the Roadster is showing weaker demand than expected. It's one thing to have the silent, "golf cart on steroids" Tesla driver's experience in a Model 3 or Model S that you use to commute to work or take your kids to soccer practice, but it's a far tougher sell getting the folks who have >$200,000 to blow on a two-seater to spend Ferrari/Lamborghini/Mclaren money for something that doesn't have the ear-fucking engine note of a Ferrari or Lamborghini. It also doesn't help that the Roadster is super generic looking.

Demand is not the issue for these halo cars. Roadster 2.0 will mark the end of gas super/hyper cars. Literally. It will set the benchmark for what a super cars should be.

I agree but he's mostly conning wall street/big finance to fund his crazy ideas which results in smart people working on big problems which leads to more scientific advancement. Sure most of his projects are memes but that doesn't mean that they are a net negative, who knows what will come from something like neuralink for example.
What's the alternative? Wall street funding more companies like Facebook and Tiktok? 1000's of intelligent people working on video and image sharing apps is very depressing imo.

I currently own a truck. The only reason why I wouldn't buy a Cybertruck when it comes out is because my truck is paid off and still works. If it ever dies or becomes too expensive to maintain, I'd seriously consider a two motor Cybertruck.

Until I can fully charge an electric vehicle within a reasonable time I'm not even remotely interested. I'm also not convinced of the safety. Apparently if I vape the battery will explode and take my entire head off, but having a thousand times that much battery power in a vehicle going 100km/h is safe.

You wouldn't need to be at a nasty truck stop to charge. You could stop at a restaurant, eat a meal, and then go on your way because chargers can be installed nearly anywhere. Gas stations on the other hand are something no one wants to live next to and can be environmental problems.
Charging at home off of normal 200amp service with a 240 charger is going to take overnight. If you had a powerwall to act as a buffer, you could get a faster charging time at home. Thing is, you're normally not going to drive eight hours in a day unless going on a trip. Just always plug in when you're at home and you should always have plenty of range.

I regularly have to make 5-6 hour drives, this is sometimes on the same day that I spend an hour or two also driving to and from work. That might be the exception to how most people use their cars but I'm sure I'm not the only one. Once infrastructure actually gets setup it makes it easier, but if I was to buy an electric car sometime in the next year I would have a hell of a time of it.
Maybe something like a battery extender would be a good addition to these vehicles. An optional addon battery pack that you can strap into the trunk and plug into the car to extend it's life or something. Or maybe if service stations could offer on the spot battery swaps instead of havign to recharge, like how you can swap gas bottles instead of getting them refilled.

Nobody with $200-500k to spend on a supercar is going to blow it on something that looks as generic as the new Roadster, drives like a golf cart on steroids, and feels like you're sitting in an Apple Store when that money can instead buy you Mclarens and Porsches that sound like tie fighters, Lamborghinis that look like something out of Akira, and Ferraris that feel like you're feel like you're fucking an Italian leather factory while with LeMans on in the background when you're behind the wheel, speak nothing for every other gas-powered masterpiece at that price point. In most communities where SJWism was forced, the majority of people there were already "left leaning", and had been told all their lives that this kind of stuff was just a "far right conspiracy theories". When wannabe tyrants came along doing what the "far right conspiracy theorists" predicted, the people in these communities would nod their head in order to not get fired or expelled, or ostracized, etc, but then they would go home and start taking the "far right conspiracy theorists" seriously. Leftists are always their own worst enemies. You can force people to pretend to believe something, but you can't force them to actually believe it, and in the age of the internet, forcing people to pretend to believe something doesn't work nearly as well as a vehicle for social control as it did in the past.
