Being a laymen, I thought humanity or the west at least would unite their resources in order to do more research and development into space exploration other technologies that would make survival in space possible.

Sadly I feeling dissatisfied with the current results

I dunno, man, socio-politically speaking we can't seem to get out of our own way let alone cooperate enough for something like that.
If nothing else you get people saying things like 'why are we throwing money way into space when we should be spending it right here feeding the hungry and solving the homelessness problem?'
Thing is they're not wrong.
It would be nice but we got to clean up our shit here first I think.

If we get helium fusion reactors going then we will get that sweet, sweet Helium-3 from Moon, Saturn and Uranus. This need will snowball a vast space industry. Most of that will happen in the last quarter of this century.

life isn't a video game
we aren't restricted to doing one single thing at a time
additionally, there's this concept called "specialization"
this means that people that are very good at some jobs aren't good at others
the people in the space tangential fields wont be much use in the ecological tangential fields, outside the areas of overlap
"ignore space to play whack-a-mole on earth" would demand these people be abandoned to starve

In this century? Colonization? Unlikely. Industrialization? Quite possible, at least the first steps anyway. Swarms of robotic or teleoperated drones building gigantic solar panels would be my bet. Especially if fusion remains "just 20 years away" for the next century.

If fusion *does* become a thing though, we may be discussing our first O'neill cylinder by the end of the century.
