Why do people do master's degrees when they could do a PhD instead?
I don't really see any reason why you'd go for what's effectively half a PhD when you could go for a full PhD instead.

This thread reminds me of when I entered my master's program and the dept held a question answering session. The 5th and 6th year PhDs were concerned about funding and the advisor suggested they could get fast food jobs on the side in case they couldn't get TA positions.

A few years later and my "half PhD" has gotten me a job in my industry, feels good man.

PhD is 90% personal discipline. You got fuck all to do except for publishing. If you schedule your shit rigorously, work as if it were an office job as in don't spend half of your time procrastinating in the lab, you'll have lots of free time. Time that you can spend working on some courses, working out, learning some new shit on mit ocw, learning new languages. If done correctly, a PhD can turn you into a fucking powerhouse, as long as you do your shit the right way, make sure your professor has some actual fucking funding so you are doing it with the dignity of a working man and not a fucking slave, and stop whining in every fucking social network or online community like us phd students LOVE to do.

yeah it is too popular now, due to hyping public education and you are not better than the pack with this.
midwits even do 2 masters, instead of 1 phd, hoping to be noticed by private sector

i desperately hope this is true, I just want a comfy life 9-5 mon fri week with weekends off and evenings for working out and vidya, really hated how in UG I felt like I was studying 24/7 for exams. starting phd next month

Forget about it dude. PhDs are last time in your life where self improvement is your main objective. When you publish, that goes into your cv. When you attend a course, it goes into your cv, and into your brains. Depending on the country, you may have some mandatory classes but theyll be very few of them.

Once you go private, feel free to play all the vidya you want when you go home, and even then you'll realize you won't play much, because the phd will have taught you some actual self discipline. Masters and ug are all about inertia : you just HAVE to study for them exams. PhDs are about making the most of three years. It demands proactivity.

And publishing requirements aren't too fucking hard to fullfill with that mindset. I already fulfilled mine on my second year (and a half)
