I mean, the hardware is all there. Why isn't resurrection as simple as powering up the neurons again?

So this kinda hits a major problem in the theoretical underpinnings of life. What does it mean when something is dead?

Heart stopped? We can just start the heart again
Brain dead? We can try to stimulate it back into working.
etc.

We simply define resurrection as the point past where we can normally revive someone. In the 1700's being able to use a defibrillator in someone would be considered resurrection. I think recently pig brains were brought back hours after death.

Nothing is dead if we can bring it back to it's previous state, only sick.

If you die of disease, it's because your entire body is so wrecked it cannot support itself anymore
If you die of say, a gunshot, it's because shock, blood loss and generic tissue damage
If you die of old age, it's more or less like in the case of disease, only in this case the genome of all your cells is damaged enough in so many different ways in every cell that the accumulative damage slows every systemic process down and the body slowly stops being able to support itself until some fatidic day

You just cannot go back in time to restore the condition before the damage. To try to fix the damage is to cure the disease, patch the gunshot and make completely new healthy cells from the old and busted ones, these things cannot be done all the time if they can be done at all when you have enough damage, nor they can be done once the body starts rotting which occurs as soon as you officially die
