Quantum is way out in the horizon but the theoretical work has been fruitful for math, physics, and CS.
>>12144610Why would you want a quantum computer? The cryptographic uses aren’t quite there because lattice cryptography has no methods of attack on a quantum computer, and I doubt you have the patience, time, and money to be doing experiments on holography with quantum ECC, or characterizing Hamiltonians without a lab to back you up.
The most interesting questions related to quantum computers arise naturally in how theoretical computer science and theoretical physics intersect, and both of these are specialized enough and far removed from everyday tasks not to be anything you would care to have in your living room.
