Feed the brain a lot of information in the context of a single issue, and it will take that information into a back room and chew on it while your conscious mind does other stuff. Think of all the breakthroughs and inventions that people say came to them in a dream, or a vision. Think of how you can struggle for hours to understand a concept, only for it to spontaneously "click" and make sense all at once. This is the phenomenon of epiphany, and it happens when the subconscious reconciles some body of information and decides to share the result.
The subconscious brain is monstrously powerful, and the more intelligent a person is, the thinner the "barrier" between it and the conscious brain.
This is all to say: stupid people are literally less conscious.
