The idea of race in humans isn't even controversial (in a scientific sense); there are measurable physiological differences (skeletal structure, bone density, disease susceptibility etc.). In fact, if you're a medical professional, it's essential that you know the race of your patient when forming a diagnosis. Race is however controversial in a taboo sense, so any self-preserving researcher will keep their head down and do whatever is necessary (citing environmental factors, massaging data etc.) to avoid explicitly addressing racial differences.
