I grew up on a farm, and without knowing him, he definitely actually means chickens. Cattle, pigs, horses, even goats,
to varying degrees they have intelligence, even rich emotional worlds, and I have some compassion toward the quality of their lives.

it depends a lot on the type of chicken, a lot of the ones bred purely for meat/egg production in controlled environments are pretty fucking retarded but other breeds can be quite smart and good bros
it's also just an issue of bird communication and emotional signals are a lot harder to pick up on without spending a lot of time around them, where with other mammals the body language and other signals are much closer to our own and we can easily pick them up without much experience
