what I mean is they take it in for oxygen as animals need oxygen to survive. no animal the size of even a pinky toe would survive in space as there are not enough oxygen molecules per area.

There is no oxygen in space, there is practically nothing, that's why it's called space after all, so you couldn't breath space and filter it for oxygen.

They don't breathe in space, moron. They cease most life processes and go into a dormant state until you put them back in a moist environment. What's amazing about tardigrades is that they can often be revived after spending months or years in this desiccated, dormant state. They aren't strolling around the space station going about their business.

The issue is that there isn't enough matter in space to "breathe" to begin with. Breathing is a continuous exchange between an open system and it's surroundings in order to power metabolic processes. You can't "eat" in space for the same reasons you can't "breathe" in space. Organisms can't encounter materials fast enough to power key metabolic processes and ultimately degrade faster than they can repair or multiply.

*IF* organisms could "breathe" in space, they would need to exist in such a low concentration that we wouldn't be able to easily find or identify them, as they would be competing for what little resources there are.
