All I needed to learn to start diving into research was how to set up controls, how to plan experiments, basic algebra, and how to visualize trends and data. I slap all my data into Graphpad and the program literally tells me what to click to check the significance or not. All this came from doing experiments and not statistical you tube videos. Unfortunately my supervisor was a complete psychopath who would scream and freak the fuck out if you couldn't do complex math in your head. One of our PhD students had a mental breakdown and left, and another two med students left soon afterwards. He calmed down a bit, but I was so fucking depressed for the year I did my master thesis. I somehow survived and I can hold my own though. I guess the best thing I would advise you to do is not focus so much on the math and statistics and focus on finding a good mentor who is willing to allow you to fail/learn.
