Is it a psychological response to perceived threats to mating? Maybe, but self-sterilization isn't exactly going to help someone mate. Biologically the best hypothesis for homosexuality/non-mating sexuality is to raise orphaned children as this increases overall fitness of a population. Is this really what's happening here? Do trans people tend to adopt (not including gay people here, specifically trans)? I haven't studied that personally, so it's an honest question.
Society, however, isn't directly linked to evolution. Society changes in more abstract ways, according to phenomena that aren't strictly biological. Why is trans on the rise? Well, the simplest answer is that there are more openly trans people. Another answer could be a shift in psychiatric practice i.e. therapists being more encouraging of transitioning. Anecdotally I know of an individual who "shops around" for therapists that pander to his pity-party instead of encouraging him to actively fix his problems - when they eventually start to encourage him to actively fix things, he swaps therapists for one that is more sympathetic to his "woe is me" routine. Could this be the case for trans people - are they simply discarding therapists that suggest self-acceptance in favor of one's that push transitioning? I think this is very likely.
society seems to favor the victim, and people don't want to do the hard work of fixing their life but rather get a palette swap that panders to their fantasies. It's "trendy" to be transgender right now, which really is the most likely reason for the surge in people transitioning.
tl;dr probably society, not biology. psychology isn't a real science
