We think we have a "self", "individuality", really we're just an amalgamation of the reflections and demands placed on us by our early childhood. After these templates and drives are imprinted, they are largely unyielding. We do the exact same thing from our formative years, to death. For some people this involves being cattle followers, because they transferred the faith they placed in their first God (their mother, and to an extent, father) to the apparatuses and power structures of their society. So they just conform to "the way" set out by those around them. As long as they feel safe, as long as their heart keeps beating, as long as they feel like they belong, they care not for anything else.
