A planet's successful species, almost by definition, needs to be competitive. How else would they have become number 1?
Cells are made up from smaller units that work together to create and make the cell live. Those cells then work to create larger more complicated life, making themselves the smaller units working together to make an animal alive.
Now those animals (in this case Humans) work together and exchange resources to keep ourselves alive. We work together to create an even bigger kind of 'life' which is all of society. All our global economics and supply chains.
The next logical step imo, is for societies to work together. To exchange resources and work to keep the biggest machine going, life itself.
Life is just small things keeping slightly bigger things alive, which keep slightly bigger things alive, etc
It's our nature to imitate the things that make us up.
