Vitamin D in your body is either in an active or inactive form, the process of activation of vitamin D is tightly regulated by your body so if you take excess inactive vitamin D, the excess will be stored in the inactive form in your liver and kidneys.
Prescription of oral calcitriol (active vitamin D) is only reserved for serious calcium deficiencies and osteoporosis, and that can be unsafe, however you would not be given oral calcitriol just for a simple vitamin D deficiency.
