Can /sci/ do the homework for 11 year old Finnish kids? The question is "How many balls is one square"=scale to the far right

No notes allowed, they're not allowed to have it, only answer + solve in head.

Yupp! Thought process? I had to use equation system to figure it out, couldn't do it by simply thinking. Why is triangle 3?

Although, I suppose there's 2 of square, meaning that triangle needs to be an odd number of circles, but it could be 3, 5, 7, 9, and testing each of these out using the second scale (first square = 4, then square = 6, then 8, etc.) and then backtracking on the first scale will show that only triangle=3 will work.

I just figured they were integers that were close in value and add up to 11. By default triangle had to be odd. After that was process of elimination.

I vaguely remember getting a problem like this, before I had learned any algebra, but that was in another century, and not in Finland.

This time, I would use the second rule to replace the squares by triangles and circles in the first rule, then remove equal numbers of circles on both sides to get the ratio between circles and triangles. Then plug this into the second rule to get squares against circles.

It doesn't work:

In the left image, take a ball from the right side to the left. Now put the two squares over to the right side. The right side should now be equal to one square, as shown in the middle image.

The problem is unsolvable with positive numbers.

if a 1square = 1circle+1triangle then
1quare=1circle+3circle

Sub 1 square = circle+triangle in first scale

Get 3 triangles = 9 circles
